The Norway Art Story

NORWAY ART is the registered trademark of a nation-wide, woman-owned U.S. company based in Minneapolis Minnesota since 1979. The company was founded in 1979 to provide another “bridge” from Norway. The Norway Art concept grew out of a love for Norway, study of art and a personal search for prints from Norway. On trips to Norway beginning in 1961, searches were made to purchase beautiful prints like those seen in homes and other buildings there. Finding no way to locate such prints to buy and bring home, it was decided to identify the publishers of the prints and to establish methods for importing them to America.

The Norway Art logo was composed on the sørlandsbanen (South Norway train route) between Stavanger and Oslo in July 1979. The next step was to meet with the heads of Norwegian print publishing companies and set up the plans for the export of the prints. Advertising in ethnic Norwegian and other Scandinavian publications in America began immediately that summer and continues to this day.

Beyond prints alone, the focus of the company has grown to include buying and selling original paintings from Scandinavia, “oilettes”, and vintage posters. Performing appraisals of original art is another business activity.
